Biographical Information[edit]
Fred Waterman was a top player in the days before the National League was formed. He played for the New York Empire team in 1865 and the New York Mutuals in 1866-1867. In 1868-1869 he played for the famous Cincinnati Red Stockings team.
He played in the inaugural season of the National Association at age 25, as well as in three other seasons. Hitting at least .300 each year, he finished with a career average from 1871-1875 of .333. His batting average was well above the team batting average each year.
He found a home as a third baseman, playing 42 games there, along with occasional games at shortstop, catcher, and in the outfield. He also worked three games as an umpire in 1873.
His obituary in the New York Times remembered him only as a member of the 1869 Red Stockings.
