Biographical Information[edit]
Patsy Dockney was born in Ireland but moved to Hoboken, NJ as a child. He was a Civil War veteran, and suffered from PTSD as a result of the war, leading to him developing an alcohol addiction. In 1864 he began playing organized baseball as a catcher and outfielder and joined the New York Gothams. In 1865, he scored 26 runs in 9 games, earning him the first spot among their best hitters. He joined the Philadelphia Athletics in 1866 and caught for Dick McBride. In 1867 he played for the Newark Eurekas. In 1868 he played for the Cincinnati Buckeyes and was their team captain. A few games into the season, he got into a fight at a bar and was out for months after getting beat up. Once he recovered from his injuries, he went to play for the New York Mutuals. By 1869 his drinking issues became even worse and in 1870, he called it quits for baseball. A year later he got arrested for theft.
He died sometime in the 1880s after being stabbed to death in a bar fight.
