Biographical Information

Jim Carleton, sometimes listed as "James Carlton", played shortstop for the New York Mutuals in 1869 and was with Cleveland in 1870. Later, from 1871-1872, he was first baseman for the Cleveland Forest Citys. Carleton played in the first professional game in the first professional league in 1871 played every game of the season. He was the only first baseman used by the Forest Citys, although his .252 batting average was below the team average. The following year, he boosted his batting average to .316, above the team average, but played only seven games even though his fielding percentage also improved quite a bit. It was just as well, perhaps, that he did not stay since the team folded after the season ended. Joe Simmons came to play the other 18 games in 1872, hitting for a lower average than Carleton and posting a lower fielding percentage.
