Biographical Information[edit]

Mitchell Stumpo has pitched in the minor leagues (as high as four seasons in AAA as of 2024) and for the Italian national team.

He began his collegiate career as a third baseman, hitting .152/.328/.196 as a freshman. As a sophomore, he improved to .364/.429/.503 and was 2-0 with a save and a 5.40 ERA. He hit .301/.388/.372 as a junior and continued to pitch more (4-4, Sv, 5.71). As a senior, he went 4-3 with three saves and a 4.89 ERA, producing at a .279/.376/.475 clip.

Stumpo was signed by Arizona Diamondbacks scout Kash Beauchamp as an undrafted free agent in 2019 [1], and he notched 5 saves with a 2.81 ERA in 11 games for the Missoula Osprey in his first year; he also allowed 2 runs in 2 games for the AZL Diamondbacks. He tied for 4th in the Pioneer League in saves. After the coronavirus shut down the minor leagues, Stumpo had a 4.26 ERA in 7 games for the Visalia Rawhide and recording a 1.08 ERA in 5 games for the Hillsboro Hops in 2021. He mainly stayed with the AA Amarillo Sod Poodles in the '21 season as he pitched 18 games with a 2.59 ERA, and he also got 6 appearances for the AAA Reno Aces and his ERA was 1.50. He had a 0.97 WHIP for the summer with 66 K in 51 1/3 IP. He tied Mack Lemieux for 4th in the D'backs chain in pitching appearances. Stumpo pitched 11 games for the Salt River Rafters in the fall, and his ERA was 3.27 in 11 innings.

In 2022, Stumpo spent the entire season with the Aces, and he notched 8 saves with a 3.53 ERA in 45 games. He tied Jeff Bain for third in the Arizona chain in appearances and tied Junior Mieses for 4th in saves. He then represented Italy in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Stumpo debuted against Cuba, and he relieved Matt Festa with a 6-2 lead in the 10th inning. He forced Yoán Moncada to ground out, gave up a single to Luis Robert Jr. to score starting runner Yoelkis Guibert then retired Alfredo Despaigne and Yurisbel Gracial to close the game. In his next game against the Netherlands, Stumpo succeeded Festa in the 9th inning with a 7-1 deficit, and he walked Roger Bernadina then Wladimir Balentien singled. He then fanned Juremi Profar, retired Chad Tromp and struck Ray-Patrick Didder out to remain scoreless. In their final game - the quarterfinal against champion Japan - Stumpo replaced Festa again in the 9th inning, this time with a 9-3 deficit. He struck out all three batters he faced - Kensuke Kondo, Shohei Ohtani and Tetsuto Yamada, but he couldn't prevent his national team from being eliminated with a 9-3 score.

Stumpo struggled in 2023, and his ERA rose to 16.55 in 12 games with the Aces. He also pitched 30 games for the Sod Poodles, and his ERA was 6.95. He started his 2024 season in Amarillo.
