Biographical Information[edit]

Chadwick Tromp appeared for the Kingdom of the Netherlands national team before making his major league debut in 2020. He is the brother of Jiandido Tromp. [1]

Tromp was signed by Cincinnati Reds scout Jim Stoeckel in 2013. [2] He was the third-string catcher for the AZL Reds that summer, going 4 for 24. He split 2014 between the AZL Reds (.323/.354/.505 in 25 G) and the Dayton Dragons (3 for 13, BB). In 2015, he played for Dayton (.293/.368/.390 in 24 G) and the Louisville Bats (2 for 4, 2B).

He and Garrett Boulware split the catching for the 2016 Daytona Tortugas evenly; each played 69 games. Chadwick hit .215/.249/.352 but fielded .995. He then made the Netherlands squad for the 2016 European Championship, part of a strong run by Aruban catchers (Shawn Zarraga caught for the Netherlands from 2010-2017 and Sicnarf Loopstok would also play for the Netherlands this decade). His two-run homer off Nikolay Markov was crucial in a 3-1 win over Russia to avoid an upset. He finished the event 3 for 12 with the one homer as the backup to Dashenko Ricardo. He sat out the Dutch victory in the Gold Medal Game. [3]

The Oranjestad native replaced Didi Gregorius on the Netherlands roster entering the final round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic after Gregorius was hurt. He did not play as Ricardo and Zarraga did the catching. [4] He split 2017 between Daytona (.311/.351/.412 in 33 G) and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (.204/.302/.238 in 36 G). He hit .316/.333/.421 in 10 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions, splitting catching with Tomas Nido and Aramis Garcia for the Arizona Fall League team. He was then a non-roster invitee to the Reds training camp for 2018. [5]

Tromp played in 2018 for Pensacola (.247/.340/.306 in 25 G) and Louisville (.264/.333/.356 in 53 G); he was the most-used catcher for the AAA Bats. A rotator cuff injury cut his season short. [6] In 2019, he saw limited time due to the rehab from the injury. He was with Louisville (.286/.389/.610, 21 RBI, 7 HR in 26 G) and the AZL Reds (.271/.410/.500, 16 RBI in 16 G on a rehab stint).

He then played for the Netherlands in the 2019 Premier 12. He hit a two-run homer off the Dominican national team's Ervin Santana in the first inning of a loss. It was his only hit of the tournament in eight at-bats as he started at catcher ahead of Hendrik Clementina. [7] He signed with the San Francisco Giants that off-season. He then became the 6th Aruban major leaguer, 7 years after the most recent (Xander Bogaerts). Starting at catcher and hitting 9th for the Giants, he struck out twice against Chris Paddack, flew out against David Bednar and whiffed against Matt Strahm for a rough debut. [8]
