Biographical Information[edit]

Mariano De Los Santos has pitched in the minor leagues and the CPBL.

De Los Santos were signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1989, and he was 2-2 with a 5.79 ERA for the GCL Pirates. After missing the 1990 season, he was 3-2 with a 1.35 ERA in the GCL, but he slumped to 1-3 with a 5.51 ERA in the Welland Pirates in 1991. De Los Santos was promoted to class-A in 1992, and he had a 7-8 record with a 2.25 ERA for the Augusta Pirates. He was 9-5 with a 3.36 ERA with the Salem Buccaneers and he also pitched 8 games with AA Carolina Mudcats while having a 4.73 ERA in 1993. He tied Ted Klamm for 3rd in the Bucs chain in wins (10) and was 4th in K (114, between Lee Hancock and Klamm).

In 1994, De Los Santos split time between AA and AAA. He was 7-2 with a 3.66 ERA for the Mudcats, then he had a 2-6 record with a 4.81 ERA with the Buffalo Bisons. Only Gary Wilson, Esteban Loaiza and Ramón Morel had more wins by a Pirates minor leaguer that year. He had a 3.62 ERA in 21 relief outings with the Mudcats in 1995, and he also recorded a 6.15 ERA in 14 starts for AAA Calgary Cannons. De Los Santos was turned into a reliever in 1996, and he had a 3.53 ERA in 52 appearances for the Mudcats, striking out 79 in 66 1/3 IP. He was 4th in the Pittsburgh farm system in games pitched, between Matt Spade and Matt Ryan. He then joined the China Times Eagles of the CPBL.

De Los Santos became an ace starter in Taiwan. He was selected into the 1997 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched 2 shutout innings. He ended up 12-11 with a 3.69 ERA, ranking 3rd in wins (3 shy of Chun-Liang Wu) and 4th in strikeouts (44 behind Enrique Burgos. In the 1997 Taiwan Series, De Los Santos completed Game 1 with only one run allowed, and he got the win over Gabriel Ozuna and the Wei Chuan Dragons. He then pitched 7 innings with only 2 runs allowed in Game 4, but Ozuna outdueled him this time. He pitched 2 1/3 innings with a run allowed in Game 6, but the Dragons still beat the Eagles in 6 games. He was named an Outstanding Player of the series alongside another ex-Pirate, Mike Garcia and behind MVP Wen-Po Huang .[1]

Jumping to the Chinatrust Whales in 1998, De Los Santos was 3-4 with a 5.74 ERA and he was released. He then returned to the minor leagues, and he had a 5.59 ERA for the Mudcats in 1998. He had a 6.14 ERA in 8 relief outings for the Acereros de Monclova of the Mexican League, and his professional career ended. He had gone 40-43 with 17 saves and a 3.97 ERA in 228 games in the minors and 15-15 with a save and a 4.19 ERA in 51 games in the CPBL.
