Biographical Information[edit]
Kevin García has played in the minors and for the Mexican national team.
He was All-Conference twice in high school then hit .274/.346/.359 as a junior college freshman. Improving ot .326/.383/.409 as a sophomore, he made All-Pacific Coast Conference. [1] Transferring to Loyola Marymount, he batted .222/.302/.241 in 2013 and .246/.314/.341 in '14.
The Toronto Blue Jays selected him in the 30th round of the 2014 amateur draft. He spent his first pro summer with the Bluefield Blue Jays (.250/.317/.319 in 23 G) and Vancouver Canadians (7 for 26, 2B, 3 BB). In 2015, he hit .255/.347/.300 for Vancouver, splitting catching with Ryan Hissey. He backed up Humberto Sosa on Mexico's team in the 2015 Premier 12 (Mexico had to rely heavily on Mexican-Americans like Kevin due to a feud between Mexico's baseball federation and the Mexican League). He was retired by Team USA's Jake Barrett and Samurai Japan's Yasuaki Yamasaki his two trips to the plate. [2]
A free agent, he signed with the Minnesota Twins and split 2016 between the Fort Myers Miracle (.250/.333/.318 in 16 G) and Cedar Rapids Kernels (.248/.292/.324). In 2017, he caught for Fort Myers (.254/.318/.264 in 59 G) and the Chattanooga Lookouts (2 for 13, 2 BB). Moving on to the independent leagues, he batted .273/.344/.379 for the 2018 Winnipeg Goldeyes and threw out half of those who tried to steal. Becoming the starter in 2019, he produced at a .233/.303/.312 clip while throwing out 25%.
After the 2020 minor league season was wiped out by COVID-19, he signed with Mexico's Pericos de Puebla and hit .250/.303/.400 in 26 games, throwing out 36%; he was their most-used backstop. He batted .283/.333/.415 in 20 contests for Puebla while backing up Gabriel Gutiérrez.
