Biographical Information

Humberto Sosa has been a minor league catcher and first baseman. He has played for the Mexican national team in seven different tournaments through 2019. He is the brother of Carlos Sosa.

Sosa signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 2005. He hit .295/.431/.395 in his pro debut with the 2006 VSL Reds. In '07, he batted .275/.363/.400 with the DSL Reds, leading the team in slugging, RBI (46) and doubles (19) as a C-1B. In the 2007 Baseball World Cup, he was 1-for-5 but with four walks and a hit-by-pitch for a .600 OBP; he scored 3 runs while backing up Jose Felix at catcher and Baltazar López at 1B. He was 0 for 7 with a walk for the 2008 Dayton Dragons and spent most of the year with the GCL Reds, batting .304/.360/.424. By this point, he was playing primarily first base.

In 2009, the 23-year-old split time between the Billings Mustangs (.359/.427/.577 in 21 G) and the Dragons (.260/.329/.373). Out of the Reds system, he returned to his native Mexico to join the 2010 Petroleros de Minatitlan, putting up a .280/.368/.422 batting line. He made the Mexican team for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games. He went 3 for 3 with two walks, a run and a RBI in a 3-2 win over the Netherlands Antilles. In a 1-0 win over Puerto Rico, he doubled off R.J. Rodriguez in the 9th to score Ivan Araujo. Mexico wound up with a Silver Medal.

Moving to his hometown Rojos del Águila de Veracruz for 2012 (his whereabouts for 2011 are unclear), he hit .276/.359/.498. He batted .252/.308/.382 in winter ball for the Venados de Mazatlán. In '13, he batted .251/.313/.387 for Veracruz. The next summer, he hit at a .256/.334/.414 clip. Manning first base for Mexico in the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, he hit .200/.238/.400. As a 1B/C for Veracruz in 2015, he batted .277/.324/.376. He joined the Mayos de Navojoa for the winter season and was 2 for 16 with six walks and a double.

Sosa was a bright spot for Mexico in the 2015 Premier 12, a rare native son on a team loaded with Mexican-Americans. He hit .346/.433/.577 with 6 RBI in eight games. His two-run double off Gabriel Alfaro with a 4-3 deficit was the winning blow against Venezuela and he hit into a two-run error by Sean Jamieson for the winning play in a 4-3 victory over Team Canada. He went deep off Zeke Spruill for the lone Mexican run in the semifinal loss to the USA. He was the lone All-Star for Mexico, picked as the top catcher.

In the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, he backed up Xorge Carrillo and got into two games late, both routs of Nicaragua as Mexico cruised to a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He went 1 for 2, singling off José Villegas to score Jose Aguilar. He started 2016 slowly for Veracruz (.224/.283/.245 in 17 G) and was loaned to the Leones de Yucatán, for whom he batted .278/.382/.384 the rest of the way. In the winter, he batted .295/.348/.344 for Navojoa.
