Biographical Information

José Aguilar has been a productive outfielder in Mexico.

Aguilar debuted with the Broncos de Reynosa in 2010, hitting .267/.333/.367 in 33 plate appearances. As a regular bench player (135 PA, 74 G) in 2011, he batted .226/.369/.274. He became a part-timer in 2012 and hit .332/.399/.470. Debuting in the winter Mexican Pacific League, he hit .308/.392/.445 with 35 runs in 51 games for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo. He was 10th in the league in OBP, .002 behind long-time major leaguer Marlon Byrd.

He became Reynosa's starting center fielder in 2013 and produced at a .315/.386/.428 clip with 16 steals in 22 tries, 7 triples and 81 runs. He tied Gilberto Mejia for 4th in the Mexican League in triples. With Naranjero in the winter, he put up a .307/.381/.438 line with 30 runs in 62 games. He was 5th in average (between Emmanuel Aliva and Dan Robertson), tied for 3rd with 14 doubles, 7th in OBP (between Bárbaro Cañizares and Mark Hamilton) and 8th in OPS (between Avila and Hamilton). He played in all five games for Hermosillo won they won the 2014 Caribbean Series but only had one at-bat, doubling off Hector Hernandez. In 2014, he hit .342/.415/.498 for Reynosa. In limited time that winter for Hermosillo, he hit .257/.352/.322.

Reynosa ceded his rights to the Leones de Yucatán in early 2015 and he hit .299/.382/.429 with 16 steals in 22 tries and 69 runs in 95 games for the Leones. He was on the Mexican national team for the 2016 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers; while a bench player who was 1 for 3, he scored three runs, one behind team leader Adrian Gonzalez as Mexico won a spot in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. With the 2016 Leones, he posted a .284/.355/.383 batting line, scored 61 runs in 98 games and went 18-for-22 in steal attempts. He had 175 putouts, 9 assists and no errors in the outfield. He tied Olmo Rosario for 8th in the LMB in swipes. With the Venados de Mazatlán in the winter, he hit .308/.377/.399. Hade he qualified, he would have tied Joey Meneses for 8th in the LMP in average.

He was originally listed on Mexico's squad for the 2017 World Baseball Classic, the only native Mexican in the outfield, as he was joined by Khris Davis, Efren Navarro, Chris Roberson and Alex Verdugo, all born in the US. By the time the games started a month later, he and Davis were gone, replaced by Sebastian Elizalde and Luis Juarez.
