Biographical Information[edit]

Joey Meneses was signed by the Atlanta Braves in 2011 and played seven seasons in their organization. Moving on to the Philadelphia Phillies chain in 2018, he hit .311 with 23 home runs for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and was named International League MVP. He went to Japan in 2019 and played for the Orix Buffaloes. He played for Mexico in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

He made his major league debut at age 30 on August 2, 2022 for the Washington Nationals. He started at first base against the New York Mets going 1 for 4 and hitting his first major league homer in the 7th inning off Yoan Lopez in a 5-1 win. That was the day the Nationals traded Juan Soto and Josh Bell to the San Diego Padres, and they needed reinforcements for that evening's game before their new acquisitions could be added to the roster. In completely unexpected fashion, Meneses outperformed the man whose trade opened a position for him, as he hit 9 doubles and 10 homers in his first 43 games, batting .328 and slugging .563 during that span, with 25 RBIs; in the same period, Soto was batting just .234 with 4 homers and 5 doubles for the Padres.
