Biographical Information[edit]

Jose Serra was a minor league infielder who later became a scout.

Serra hit .256/.336/.288 for the 1992 Bluefield Orioles, fielding .947 at second base, while stealing 19 bases in 28 tries. He tied for 9th in the Appalachian League in steals. With the Albany Polecats the next year, he fielded .950 and batted .213/.285/.264. The lone positive offensively was 26 steals (caught 6 times). Back with Albany in '94, he improved his batting line to .244/.313/.289 and his fielding percentage at second to .972. He stole 33 bases in 41 attempts. By 1995, he was a backup infielder, hitting .261/.328/.295 for the High Desert Mavericks. He ended his playing career in the independent leagues, batting .287/.389/.374 with 34 steals in 42 tries for the Greenville Bluesmen. He was second in the Big South League in swipes, 8 behind leader Dennis Hood. He was named the league's All-Star 2B.

Serra then worked for the Chicago Cubs as a scout, starting in December 1996. In December 2008, they promoted him to director of Latin American scouting. He signed Al Albuquerque, Arismendy Alcantara, Xavier Batista, Alberto Cabrera, Jeimer Candelario, Esmailin Caridad, Julio Castillo, Welington Castillo, Starlin Castro, Rafael Dolis, Kevin Encarnacion, Marco Hernandez, Eloy Jimenez, Junior Lake, Luis Liria, Carlos Marmol, Juan Mateo, Yoanner Negrin, Starling Peralta, Felix Pie, Edgar Rondon, Jesús Valdez, Antonio Valerio and Jose Zapata.

He has also served as GM of the Estrellas Orientales.
