Biographical Information

Jose Zapata was signed by Chicago Cubs scouts Jose Serra and Carlos Reyes in 2012. He was 4-0 with a save and a 1.93 ERA for the 2013 DSL Cubs, posting a 0.80 WHIP with only 9 walks in 56 innings. That off-season, he was in a car accident that injured Kevin Encarnacion and three other teammates. The injuries from that crash ended Zapata's playing career.

Zapata became a coach with the AZL Cubs in 2016-2017, DSL Cubs 1 in 2018-2019, DSL Cubs Blue in 2021, and DSL Cubs Red in 2022. Zapata returned stateside as pitching coach of the ACL Cubs in 2023-2024.
