Biographical Information[edit]
Jhonny Santos has played as high as AAA and for the Panamanian national team.
He was 3 for 12 with two walks for Panama in the 2012 U-18 Baseball World Cup. [1] He was signed by Miami Marlins scouts Luis Cordoba and Albert Gonzalez the next year. [2] Making his pro debut in 2014, he batted .224/.286/.288 for the DSL Marlins but showed off a great arm with 12 assists in 55 games in center field. Coming stateside in 2015, he batted .301/.355/.350 for the GCL Marlins. He was ninth in the Gulf Coast League in average, between Cornelius Randolph and Roldani Baldwin. [3]
Santos split 2016 between the Batavia Muckdogs (.203/.276/.276 in 52 G) and Greensboro Grasshoppers (3 for 24, 3 BB). He was with the same two teams in '17, hitting .276/.313/.390 in 30 games for Batavia (8-for-8 in steals) and .192/.267/.240 in 31 games for Greensboro (6-for-7 in steals). In 2018, he was with Greensboro (.268/.342/.426 in 79 G) and the Jupiter Hammerheads (.196/.246/.265 in 28 G), stealing 19 bases in 27 tries between the two stops. Panama appeared in the 2019 Caribbean Series, their first Caribbean Series appearance since 1960. Santos was with their Toros de Herrera representative. He was 2 for 6 as a part-time right fielder (though he made two errors) as the Toros won, giving Panama its first Series title since 1950 (and second ever).
That summer, he played for Jupiter (.241/.325/.356 in 55 G) and the AAA New Orleans Baby Cakes (1 for 5, 2B), stealing 12 bases in 15 tries. The Seattle Mariners took him in the AAA portion of the 2019 Rule V Draft. [4] In the 2020 Caribbean Series, he was 2 for 17 with three walks and a run for the Astronautas de Chiriquí. The 2020 minor league season was wiped out by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the 2021 Caribbean Series, he hit .235/.350/.471 with four runs in five games for the Federales de Chiriquí. The Oakland A's signed him for the '21 season. [5] He hit .242/.314/.413 with 13 homers (a new career high) though only one steal for the Midland RockHounds. He tied Jordan Díaz for ninth in the A's system in dingers.
Jhonny was 2 for 17 with two walks and a run for the Astronautas de Los Santos in the 2022 Caribbean Series. Ten years after he was on Panama's junior national team, he was on their senior team for the 2022 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. He did not get into a game as Allen Córdoba, Jose Ramos and Rodrigo Orozco Jr. started in the outfield, with Luis Castillo (the other backup) also seeing action. Panama won to get a spot in the 2023 World Baseball Classic, their first World Baseball Classic in 14 years. [6]
