Biographical Information[edit]

Jake Polancic has pitched in the minors and for Team Canada.

Polancic was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 11th round of the 2016 amateur draft, one pick before Zack Thompson. He signed for a $100,000 bonus; the scout was Doug Mathieson. [1] He had a rocky pro debut, going 0-3 with a 7.59 ERA for the AZL Diamondbacks that summer. He went 2-5 with a 7.38 ERA the next summer, striking out over a batter per inning but posting a 1.86 WHIP.

The right-hander split 2018 between the AZL Diamondbacks (4.26 in 5 G), Missoula Osprey (2-1, 2 Sv, 5.65 in 13 G) and Hillsboro Hops (0 R in 1 2/3 IP), making strides. He was excellent for Hillsboro in 2019 at 2-0, 0.92 with only 10 hits in 19 2/3 innings (though he walked 15). The Diamondbacks still let him go. He went to the independent leagues in 2021, going 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Next signing with the Evansville Otters, he was a solid reliever at 5-3, 2.66 with 71 K in 47 1/3 IP, allowing only a .87 WHIP. He was 1-5 with 17 saves and a 2.16 ERA for the '23 Otters, fanning 48 in 33 1/3 innings. He was third in the Frontier League in saves, behind only Frank Moscatiello and Dylan Smith. He pitched once for Canada in the 2023 Pan American Games Qualifier. He closed out a 11-1 win over Peru, relieving Jesen Therrien. He walked Gabriel Hernández then struck out Bruno Takenaka to end the inning. After a single by Alonso Tenya opened the final frame, he whiffed Rider Zevallos and Yun Contreras then got Liam Arakaki on a grounder. [2]

Given another chance in the minors, this time by the Milwaukee Brewers, he had a rough time with the 2024 Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, going 0-1 with a 9.24 ERA and 1.97 WHIP in 14 games.
