Biographical Information[edit]

Left-handed pitcher Zack Thompson was drafted twice, the first time in the 11th round of the 2016 amateur draft, by the Tampa Bay Rays, when he graduated from high school, and the second time in the 2019 amateur draft, by the St. Louis Cardinals, with the 19th overall pick, out of the University of Kentucky. In his junior year with the Wildcats, he went 6-1, 2.90 in 14 starts, with 130 strikeouts in 90 innings.

In his first professional season in 2019, he made 2 starts with the GCL Cardinals before being promoted to the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Florida State League, where he was used exclusively in relief in his 11 appearances. He had no decisions that year and put up an ERA of 3.52 in 15 1/3 innings. He then sat out the 2020 season while the minot leagues were shut down by the Coronavirus pandemic and returned in 2021 straight at AAA with the Memphis Redbirds. He probably would have benefitted from not being promoted that agressively given his lack of prefessional experience, as he put up some rather poor numbers, a 2-10 record coupled with a 7.06 ERA in 22 games. He allowed plenty of traffic on the bases, with 114 hits and 57 walks in 93 innings, although he did pick up 82 strikeouts. He did have much better result in a stint in the Arizona Fall League following the season, with a 3-0, 1.56 record in 9 games.

He made his major league debut on June 3, 2022, pitching 4 innings in relief of Miles Mikolas and picking up the save in a 14-5 win over the Chicago Cubs.

He is not to be confused with contemporary pitcher Zach Thompson.
