Biographical Information[edit]

Heinie Smith crossed paths with a couple of baseball's most famous names. He originally came up with the Louisville Colonels in 1897 as a second baseman. Another rookie on the team who also played second in nine games (although he mostly played outfield) was Honus Wagner.

Smith played a bit in the majors for a few years but did not become a regular until 1902, a year he also managed the New York Giants for 32 games right before the Giants hired John McGraw, who would manage the team for 30 years.

Heinie had pitched a couple of games in 1901, but when he managed himself in 1902, he assigned himself to play only second base.

He also played for Rochester in 1901 and also umpired 4 National League games that year.
