Biographical Information

Greg Field pitched for six seasons in AAA and was a Pitcher of the Year in AA yet never made the major leagues.

The Minnesota Twins took Field in the 4th round of the 1975 amateur draft, one pick after Dickie Noles; he was the 85th overall selection. He was 5-5 with a 4.83 ERA in his pro debut for the Elizabethton Twins. He improved to 10-7, 3.04 with the 1976 Wisconsin Rapids Twins. He was 9th in the Midwest League in ERA, between Mitch Lukevics and Ken Cvejdlik. His 13 complete games (in 21 starts) tied Bob Stoffle for the MWL lead. He was 6th with 123 strikeouts and tied for 10th in wins.

With the 1977 Orlando Twins, he was sharper yet at 14-7 with a 2.78 ERA, walking only 33 in 162 innings. He finished among the Southern League leaders in ERA (7th, between Bryn Smith and Bill Paschall), wins (2nd, one behind Smith), complete games (13, tied for 3rd behind Sheldon Burnside and Smith) and shutouts (4, tied for first with George Throop and Gary Wilson). He and Rich Wortham were the SL All-Star pitchers and he was named SL Pitcher of the Year, beating out players like Smith, Larry McWilliams, Sammy Stewart, Pat Underwood, Matt Keough, Tim Stoddard and LaMarr Hoyt among many future major leaguers.

Field slumped in 1978 with Orlando (2-2, 3.66) and the Toledo Mud Hens (6-6, 4.94). In the offseason and early 1979, he was part of two major deals. He was traded with Jesse Orosco to the New York Mets for Jerry Koosman. He never pitched in the Mets chain though he did appear for New York in an exhibition against the United States Military Academy, pitching very well. He was then shipped with Tim Foli to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Frank Taveras. Greg was just 4-13 with a 4.85 ERA for the Portland Beavers while Foli helped the Bucs win the 1979 World Series. Field tied Bud Anderson, Jeff Little, Randy Hammon and Don Kainer for third in the 1979 Pacific Coast League in losses.

Field was 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in two games for the 1980 Buffalo Bisons. He was the player to be named later shipped to the Atlanta Braves for Eddie Solomon and spent the rest of the summer between the Savannah Braves (6-2, 3.50) and Richmond Braves (4-6, 4.57). With Savannah for all of 1981, Greg was 11-10 with a 4.19 ERA. He tied for 9th in the SL in wins, tied for 8th in losses, tied for 8th in complete games (8) and was 4th with 198 hits allowed (behind Storm Davis, Mark Eichhorn and Frank Wills). He was 7th in the Braves chain in wins and tied Steve Bedrosian and Craig McMurtry for 8th in losses. In 1982, he pitched for Savannah (8-3, 3 Sv, 2.72 in 29 G) and Richmond (1 R in 2 IP). He went 2-1 with two saves and a 4.40 ERA for Richmond in '83. He returned to the Twins system for his final year, going 1-5 with a 4.78 ERA for Toledo.

Overall, Field had gone 74-68 with a 3.86 ERA and 5 saves in 241 minor league games (162 starts). In 1,181 1/3 IP, he allowed 1,309 hits and 379 walks while striking out 725.
