Biographical Information

George Mitchell was the twin brother of Robert Mitchell; the two formed a battery together with the 1924 St. Louis Stars, George's first year. George played for the Indianapolis ABCs in 1925 (0-10) and 1926 (6-4).

Mitchell went 9-6 with a 2.43 RA for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1927, finishing second in the Negro National League in RA behind William Bell. George had a 14-12 record for the 1928 Detroit Stars, tying Bill Foster for third in the NNL in wins behind Ted Trent and Carl Glass. Mitchell fell to 4-7 in 1929 and also hit .268.

In 1930, Mitchell was worse yet at 1-8 for the Chicago American Giants. He rebounded in 1931, going 14-3 with a 2.56 RA for the ABCs and hitting .245. He led the NNL in victories, three ahead of Ray Brown. Mitchell's roller-coaster career turned back downward at 0-3 with the Cleveland Stars in 1932.

Mitchell kept appearing in limited roles after that, with the Detroit Stars in 1933, the ABCs in 1938 and St. Louis Stars in 1939. He coached for the West in the East-West Games of 1939. In 1941, he managed the St. Louis Stars to a 20-12 record, second in the Negro American League behind only the Monarchs. George was coaching for the West in the 1941 East-West Game when he was summoned to pinch-hit for Billy Horne in the 9th inning. He did not get to bat against Bill Byrd; with his team down, 8-3, Jimmie Crutchfield was caught stealing to end the game.

Mitchell was with the New York Black Yankees in 1942, Harrisburg-St. Louis Stars in 1943 and Houston Eagles in 1949.
