Biographical Information

Carl Glass was a cavalry private in 1920, stationed at the Fort Huachuca Military Reservation. He may well have served in the military other years. He also possibly appeared in at least one game with the Twenty-fifth infantry team that year in St. Louis, MO - Glass was with either the 10th or 9th Calvary.

Glass made his Negro League debut in 1923, going 3-0 with a 2.74 ERA for the Memphis Red Sox, walking only 2 in 23 innings (though James Riley writes that he had poor control). He hit .219/.219/.281 and played six games in left field and one at first base. He also was briefly with the Birmingham Barons, going 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in one start and going 2 for 4 with a homer at the plate to finish the year with a .250/.250/.417 line at the plate and a 3-1, 2.81 pitching record.

Known for his curveball, Carl went 4-7 for Memphis in 1924 and followed with a 7-6 year for the club. In 1926, Lefty went 4-4 for the St. Louis Stars. Glass split 1927 between the Kansas City Monarchs (1-2) and Memphis (7-13 for a team that otherwise was 21-61).

Glass was 15-13 for another sub-.500 Memphis club during the 1928 season. He was second in the Negro National League in wins, trailing only Ted Trent and was 4th in strikeouts (83). Glass managed the team that year as well. In '29, Carl hit .276 at the plate and was 5-6 on a Memphis team that otherwise was 5-24.

The 32-year-old veteran split 1930 between Memphis, the Louisville White Sox and the Chicago American Giants. He later managed the Cincinnati Tigers to a 3-5 record against other top black teams in 1936.

Despite playing for bad teams most of his career, Glass went 46-52 overall.
