The Gary SouthShote RailCats began play in the independent Northern League in 2002. The team played a schedule of 90 road games in their inaugural season before making the U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Indiana their home beginning in 2003. Led by manager Greg Tagert, the RailCats captured the league title in 2005. The RailCats moved to the American Association following the folding of the Northern League in 2011.

Despite playing in the Chicagoland metropolitan area, the RailCats are exempt from a rule that prohibits an affiliated team from moving within 75 miles of the area, to which the Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox have territorial rights.
