Biographical Information[edit]
Matt Schmidt played two years of college ball at McHenry County College where he earned All-Conference and All-Region Honors followed by two years at Chicago State University. He earned First Team All-WAC honors there in 2015. After college he played internationally in the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) of Ontario, Canada. In 2016 and 2017 he played for the Guelph Royals. In 2018 he pursued a professional opportunity with the Garden City Wind of the Pecos League only to find himself back in the IBL to end the summer. His final playing season started with the Welland Jackfish and a mid-season trade brought him back to the Guelph Royals to retire with the same team that initially signed him to the IBL.
Schmidt began his coaching career while still a player. He was an assistant coach at McHenry in 2018 and possibly for the two prior seasons as well. He joined his alma mater Chicago State University for the 2018/2019 college season. In 2020 Schmidt returned to the IBL to manage the Kitchener Panthers. Unfortunately, he never got the opportunity to actually manage as the IBL cancelled the 2020 season due to COVID-19. He left the IBL in 2021 to serve as the hitting coach for the Gary Southshore Railcats of the independent American Association.
In 2022 Schmidt joined the Kansas City Royals organization as a coach for the ACL Royals. He moved up a level in 2023 and worked as a bench coach for the Columbia Fireflies.
