Biographical Information[edit]
Greg Tagert pitched at San Francisco State University but never played pro ball. He later was a Detroit Tigers scout and pitching coach at the University of New Mexico. He went on to manage for nine years in the Frontier League, posting a 412-336 mark as skipper of five different clubs. At one point, he held the Frontier League record for managerial wins.
Starting in 2005, Tagert was the skipper of the Gary SouthShore RailCats, first in the Northern League and then in the American Association. He managed the team through the 2021 season though the Railcats did not play in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Tagert had a 835-744 record with the RailCats, good for a .529 winning percentage over 16 seasons. His RailCats teams won two Northern League Championships (2005 & 2007) and one American Association Championship (2013). In addition, Tagert was named Northern League Manager of the Year twice (2007 & 2009) and American Association Manager of the Year once (2016).
Tagert finally left the independent leagues in 2022 and joined the San Francisco Giants organization as manager of the ACL Giants Orange. The hiatus was short-lived, however. After manager Rick Forney left the Winnipeg Goldeyes following the 2022 season, Tagert applied for, and was hired, to manage the Goldeyes in 2023. The Goldeyes failed to thrive under his leadership and he only lasted one season in the position. In 2024 Tagert managed the Tri-City ValleyCats of the Frontier League to a 53-41 record, a considerable improvement over his previous four years.
