Biographical Information[edit]

Denys Brechko has played for the Ukrainian national team.

He hit .214/.294/.286 in the 2011 European Junior Championship, handling 19 chances error-free and allowing 6 runs in 3 2/3 IP. [1] He was 1 for 4 and allowed one run in 2/3 IP in the 2012 European U21 Championship. [2] He made it to the senior team by the 2013 B-Level European Championship, getting into one game as a substitute at third base for Serhii Tykhonets. He had one put-out and hit into an error by Daniel Cooper of Great Britain. [3]

Playing for KNTU Elizavetgrad in the 2014 European Cup, he was 2 for 7 with two errors in six chances and allowed four runs in 1 2/3 IP. [4] He led the Ukrainian offense in the 2014 European U21 Championship (.400/.417/.550, 6 RBI in 5 G), handled 12 chances without an error, was 2-for-2 in steals and allowed 2 runs in 2 2/3 IP. He tied for 7th in the event in hits (8) and RBI, tied for 7th in assists and tied Tomáš Juněc for 2nd in doubles (3). [5]

He hit .190/.286/.190 in the 2015 European Cup, pitched three shutout innings and fielded .875 for Elizavetgrad. [6] With them for the 2016 CEB Cup, he did better at .389/.450/.389 with a .889 FLD& and four runs in four games. [7] He pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings in the 2017 European U23 Championship and produced at a .400/.536/.750 clip with 8 runs in 6 games. [8] He hit .278/.263/.333 in the 2017 B-Level European Championship, handling 11 chances error-free. [9]

Denys played for Biotechkomanda KNTU in the 2018 CEB Cup, hitting .300/.333/.350, fielding .923 and pitching 1/3 shutout innings. [10] In the round-robin of the 2018 C-Level European Championship, he hit .300/.417/.500 with 5 runs in 3 games, handling six chances error-free and tying for 7th in runs. In the finale, he hit 3rd and played 3rd for Ukraine, going 1-for-3 with a steal against Romania's Eduard Pirvu and handling one assist in a 3-2 win. [11]

Brechko batted .375/.353/.438 with 3 runs in 4 games for BioTexCom KNTU in the 2019 CEB Cup, handling eight chances error-free, with a 3-hit game in the opening win over the Montigny Cougars. He allowed one run in two innings. [12] In the 2019 B-Level European Championship, he hit .316/.435/.632 with 7 runs and 6 RBI in 5 games, handling eight error-free chances. He tied Vytas Valincius and Tomáš Biskorovajny for the most doubles (four). [13]

At the 2021 European Championship Qualifiers, he was 2 for 14 with two walks, a hit-by-pitch, two runs, a RBI and a .824 fielding for Ukraine but they won to advance to the 2021 European Championship. [14] Still holding down the hot corner and batting in the heart of the order in that event, he hit .365/.583/.625 with 8 walks and 4 runs in 6 games, though he fielded .762 with five errors. He hit a two-run homer off Lukas Steinlein as part of a 3-hit day against Germany. He led Ukraine in OBP, walks and runs and was second to Kostiantyn Chukhas in OPS. He tied Félix Brown for the event lead in errors, but was also 6th in OBP (between Mitch Glasser and Marek Chlup) and tied Shawn Larry and Noel Gonzalez for 2nd in walks (one behind former major leaguer and event MVP Roger Bernadina).
