Biographical Information

Shortstop Dawel Lugo was signed by Toronto Blue Jays scouts Marco Paddy and Hilario Soriano before the 2012 season. He began his professional career with the GCL Blue Jays that season, where he hit .224 in 47 games, although he did produce 5 triples. In 2013, he played with the Bluefield Blue Jays of the Appalachian League and the Vancouver Canadians of the Northwest League, putting up a combined batting line of .284/.301/.437 in 67 games. Showing more power than the average middle infielder, he hit 7 homers and drove in 44 runs. In 2014, he spent the entire season with the Lansing Lugnuts of the Midwest League, where he hit .259/.286/.329 in 117 games.

Dawel started the 2015 season with the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Florida State League but continued to struggle with the bat, hitting .219/.258/.292 in 67 games. At the beginning of July, he was demoted back to Lansing and seemed to find his hitting stroke, hitting .336 in 31 games. On August 8th, he was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in return for big league infielder Cliff Pennington. he finished by playing 22 games for the Kane County Cougars, hitting .333. Overall for the year, he hit .270/.302/.348 in 120 games.

Dawel started 2016 in the California League with the Visalia Oaks, then on July 11th was promoted to the Mobile BayBears of the Southern League, reaching AA for the first time. he hit well at both stops - .314 in 79 games for Visalia and .306 in 48 games for Mobile. His combined line was .311/.339/.492 with 23 doubles, 7 triples and 17 homers. By then he was playing mainly third base with the occasional appearance at shortstop His excellent performance earned him time in the Arizona Fall League after the season. When 2017 started, he was still in AA, albeit with a new D-Backs affiliate in the Southern League, the Jackson Generals. He was hitting 282 after 88 games when on July 18th, he was included in the second major league trade of his career, this time heading to the Detroit Tigers along with two very raw infield prospects, Sergio Alcantara and Jose King, in return for OF J.D. Martinez.

He was named to the World team for the 2018 Futures Game then made his debut with the Tigers on August 30, 2018. He started at second base and went 1 for 4 with a double in an 8-7 win over the New York Yankees.
