Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Sergio Alcántara was signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks as a 16-year-old before the 2013 season, when he began his professional career with the AZL Diamondbacks. Given his young age, the Diamondbacks let him climb the organizational ladder slowly over the next two years, but he suffered a setback in 2016, when an injury limited him to 79 games. He played for four different teams, including a return to the Arizona League on a rehabilitation assignment, but also reached High Class A for the first time with the Visalia Oaks of the California League. Overall, he had his best year with the bat, hitting .284/.356/.347. After the season, he played for the Tigres del Licey in the Dominican League.

Sergio began the 2017 season with Visalia. Still only 20, he hit only .217 in 82 games until July 18th, when he was one of three youngsters traded to the Detroit Tigers in return for OF J.D. Martinez. Accompanying him were Jose King and Dawel Lugo. It took him a few years, but he reached the majors with the Tigers late in the 2020 season, getting into 10 games and hitting .143.

Following the 2020 season, the Tigers put him on waivers and on February 5, 2021 he was claimed by the Chicago Cubs to provide infield depth. He ended up playing more than anyone expected as the Cubs had a rash of injuries to their infielders.
