Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Cody Scarpetta is the son of Dan Scarpetta, the nephew of Dennis Scarpetta, and the cousin of Brett Scarpetta..

Scarpetta was elected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round of the 2007 amateur draft (the scout was Harvey Kuenn Jr.), one round after Eric Fryer. He dropped to the 11th round due to a torn flexor tendon in his right index finger. The Brewers signed him for $325,000, but the deal was voided when he needed a second surgery. Scarpetta then signed for $125,000, despite a commitment to Creighton University. He made his pro debut the next summer with the AZL Brewers. He was 1-0 with 27 strikeouts, 8 hits and one run in 15 2/3 IP. Promoted to the Helena Brewers, he went 1-0 with a 3.48 ERA and struck out 31 more in only 20 2/3 innings.

Cody spent most of 2009 with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (4-11, 3.43, 55 BB, 116 K, .217 opponent average in 105 IP) except for one start for the Huntsville Stars (3 R in 5 IP). He tied for 4th in the Midwest League in losses, second to Trey Watten in the Brewers chain. Baseball America rated him as having the best breaking ball in the MWL and being the league's 9th-best prospect, between Jaff Decker and Ethan Martin.

The right-hander was 7-12 with a 3.87 ERA for the Brevard County Manatees in 2010, striking out 142 and walking 67 in 128 innings. He was second in the Brewers chain in wins and whiffs (behind Dan Merklinger in Ks) and 5th in walks. In the Florida State League, he tied for 4th in losses, 3rd in walks (behind Shooter Hunt and Jeurys Familia) and tied Merklinger for fourth in strikeouts. Baseball America ranked him as Milwaukee's second-best prospect entering 2011, behind Mark Rogers, though neither made the publication's top-100 list for all of baseball.

He went 8-5 with a 3.85 ERA in 23 starts for the Huntsville Stars in 2011, allowing a .234 average though control remained poor (61 BB in 117 IP) and his strikeout rate was down (98 K). He allowed the lowest average in the Southern League, was 5th in walks and was 8th in ERA (between Randall Delgado and Will Savage). In the Milwaukee system, he tied Nick Bucci and Jimmy Nelson for 7th in wins and was 5th in walks (between Frankie De La Cruz and Wily Peralta).

The Brewers, whose bullpen had been worn thin, called Scarpetta up to the majors on July 10. After one game with the big club, in which he did not appear, he was sent back down. [1]

For the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League in 2011, Scarpetta was atrocious, going 0-3 with a 19.64 ERA and 13 walks in 7 innings.

Scarpetta missed the entire 2012 season due to Tommy John surgery (performed by Lewis Yocum). He came back in June 2013 with the Brevard County Manatees but went 0-5, 7.15 and was released by the Brewers. He signed with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League in 2014, and after going 0-2, 5.13 in 8 starts, found another opportunity in the affiliated minor leagues, joining the Atlanta Braves' organization. In only his third start for the Lynchburg Hillcats of the Carolina League on June 27, he combined on a no-hitter with Benino Pruneda, pitching the first 7 innings of a 5-0 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks. It was the second straight no-hitter for Lynchburg over Wilmington, as a couple of teammates had also turned the trick the previous night.

Scarpetta remained active in indie ball through the 2016 season.
