Biographical Information

Second baseman Chris Bisson won a Gold Medal in the 2011 Pan American Games.

Bisson played volleyball, basketball and baseball while in high school. He struggled as a college freshman, hitting .157/.271/.266, fielding .920 and getting caught in half of his six steal attempts. He hit .301 with 17 steals in 18 tries and a .417 OBP in the New York Collegiate Baseball League that summer, though. He led Kentucky in numerous offensive departments in 2009, batting .360/.414/.455 with 49 runs and 52 RBI in 53 games; he was 13-for-15 in base-stealing. He fielded .953. He finished 7th in the Southeastern Conference in average. As a junior, Chris remained productive at .329/.416/.467 with 43 runs and 32 steals (caught 7 times) in 51 games. He was the first Kentucky player to steal 30+ bases since Chad Green in 1996. He also was picked as All-Southeastern Conference at 2B for the second straight year; no UK second basemen had picked in consecutive years to the All-Conference team since Terry Shumpert (1986-1987). He led the SEC in swipes, tying Gary Brown for 27th in NCAA Division I. He did this despite missing five games when his nose was broken by a fastball in March.

He was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2010 amateur draft. The scout was Mark Conner. He was the second college middle infielder they took that year, as they had selected Jedd Gyorko in the second round. Bisson had an unimpressive first year as a pro, hitting .250/.333/.292 in 22 games for the Eugene Emeralds with 5 steals in 9 tries and only 1 hit in 18 at-bats for the AZL Padres (albeit with four walks).

With the Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2011, the Ottawa native batted .261/.345/.325 with 21 steals in 31 tries. He was Fort Wayne's main second baseman (82 G, .968 FLD) but also saw action at 3B (.895 in 35 G), SS (.931 in 89 G) and LF (1 G, 1 E). He played for Team Canada that fall; it was their greatest year ever, as they won Bronze at the 2011 Baseball World Cup for the second time and Gold at the 2011 Pan American Games for their first Gold in an international tournament. Two of his teammates were familiar to him - Andrew Albers was a teammate at Kentucky while Mark Hardy was a teammate with Fort Wayne. Bisson was used in a utility role. He was 6 for 18 with a double, homer, 5 walks, steal, five runs and five RBI in 8 games (5 starts) in the World Cup. He hit a pinch-hit, 3-run homer off Pete Sikaras of Greece. He started Canada's final 3 games in left field, with Jamie Romak struggling, and also saw action at 2B and 3B. In the Pan American Games, he was 0 for 3 with a walk, playing one game in left; Canada mostly used Tim Smith in left, Brock Kjeldgaard or Romak in right, Kjeldgaard or Michael Crouse in center, Skyler Stromsmoe at 2B and Shawn Bowman at 3B.
