Biographical Information

Third baseman Shawn Bowman played 10 years in the minor leagues.

Bowman did a fine job for Canada in the 2002 World Junior Championships, hitting .395/.439/.816 with 4 home runs and 17 RBI in 8 games. He tied three others for third in homers behind Delmon Young and Lastings Milledge and was second in RBI, one behind Young. He made the All-Tournament Team at shortstop, beating out Chin-Lung Hu among others.

Bowman was taken by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 2002 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Claude Pelletier and debuted professionally in 2003, looking unimpressive with the Kingsport Mets (.121/.216/.152 in 10 games) and Brooklyn Cyclones (.203/.260/.268 in 42 games). In 2004, he showed off some talent with the Capital City Bombers, batting .255/.336/.439 with 18 home runs in 396 at-bats; one problem was 121 strikeouts.

Bowman was Player of the Week in the Florida State League for 6/6/05-6/12/05. He finished the year with a .221/.282/.429 batting line. He hit 17 home runs in 326 at-bats but struck out 110 times. He hit .310 against left-handers but .188 against right-handers. Bowman returned to the St. Lucie Mets in 2006, batting .252/.311/.387 in 32 games. He went 3 for 20 with St. Lucie in 2007.

In 2008, Bowman played for St. Lucie (.340/.369/.485 in 26 G, .517 vs. LHP) and the Binghamton Mets (.248/.263/.363 in 29 G)

He spent 2009 with AA Binghamton in the Eastern League where he hit .294/.346/.458 with 24 doubles, nine home runs, 44 RBI and 25 walks to 101 strikeouts. He fielded .975 at third base and hit .368 against southpaws. He also represented the Canadians at the 2009 Baseball World Cup, having gone .275/.400/.491 with three HR's and 15 RBI, helping the Canucks with the bronze medal, their first medal ever at a Baseball World Cup. He was named to the All-Tournament Team for his performance even though Cuba's Michel Enríquez, Nicaragua's Jimy González, Puerto Rico's José Valentin and Spain's Paco Figueroa all had clearly better offensive stats and the USA's Pedro Alvarez and Australia's Luke Hughes had higher slugging percentages. He was also a member of the Canadian team at the 2009 World Baseball Classic, but did make it onto the field.

Bowman played in 12 spring training games for the New York Mets in 2010 and hit for .300 before being designated for assignment on April 5th. He was claimed off waivers from the Mets by the Toronto Blue Jays on April 14, 2010. The Jays optioned his contract to their Las Vegas AAA team as the 40 man roster with the parent club was full. He .269 with 22 home runs and 70 RBI in the Jays system that year. Joining the Atlanta Braves system for 2011, Bowman hit .259/.303/.409 in 65 games between three clubs, including his first stint at Triple A. In 52 games there, he slashed .278/.319/.461. His final season was 2012. Playing in the Miami Marlins chain, he batted .247/.304/.378 with 11 home runs and 53 RBI in 118 games between two clubs.

Overall, Bowman hit .255/.313/.419 with 93 home runs and 357 RBI in 732 games.

Following the conclusion of his playing career, Bowman returned to Canada and became active in coaching at various levels. These included serving as an assistant coach for the 2016-2017 University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and as a coach with the Canadian Junior National team from 2014-2017. In June 2017 Bowman went international when Major League Baseball hired him to coach in France. He stayed there through 2018.

Bowman became a manager with the DSL Pirates 2 in 2019 and an assistant field coordinator at the Pittsburgh Pirates training complex in 2020.
