Biographical Information[edit]

Bryan Woodall was a star pitcher in the CPBL.

Woodall was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 21th round of the 2007 Amateur Draft, and he was 2-5 with a 3.72 ERA with the A- Yakima Bears in his rookie year. Woodall was promoted to the class-A South Bend Silver Hawks, and he extended his solid performance as he had a 4-5 record with a 3.24 ERA. He got promoted again in 2010 after he had a 2.15 ERA in 37 2/3 innings with the A+ Visalia Rawhide, then he recorded a 3.70 ERA in 15 appearances with the AA Mobile BayBears.

The Alabama native stayed with the BayBears in 2011, and his ERA was 3.43 in 50 games (16 starts). He tied Billy Bullock for 8th in the Southern League in appearances. Woodall reached AAA in 2012; he had an elite 1.94 ERA in 35 games with Mobile, but he recorded a terrible 7.08 ERA with AAA Reno Aces. The 27-year-old righty still stayed in AA in 2014, then the Diamondbacks released him. He pitched for the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League in 2015, then an invitation from Far East got his attention.

Woodall joined the CTBC Brothers in the middle of the 2015 season, and he had a 3.45 ERA in 11 starts, not a bad performance for a foreign player. However, the Brothers signed Andrew Sisco and Donovan Hand in 2016, so Woodall came back to Lancaster. Defying expectations (and not in a good way), former CPBL ERA title winner Sisco had a terrible 7.55 ERA in his first 11 starts, so the Brothers signed Woodall again to replace him. Woodall extended his solid performance, as he had a 6-2 record with a 3.93 ERA, and he was named the starter of the 2016 Taiwan Series opener. Woodall pitched 7 innings, only allowing one run - Yi-Chuan Lin's solo shot, and got the win over Mike Loree and the EDA Rhinos despite his bullpen allowing 6 runs in the remain two innings. Woodall then started in Game 4, and he only allowed 2 runs in 6 innings pitched. However, he still got the loss because Yi-Chih Huang also pitched 5 innings with just one run allowed. The Rhinos beat the Brothers in 6 games for their first Taiwan Series title.

With his reliable performance in 2016, the Brothers decided to bring him back in 2017, and Woodall perfectly met their need. The veteran righty was 13-8 with a 3.63 ERA, and led the league in starts, innings and hits allowed. He was also 4th in wins (3 behind Loree and Zack Segovia), 4th in ERA (1.45 behind Loree) and 5th in strikeouts (19 behind Loree). Woodall jumped to the Fubon Guardians in the next season, and he had his career year. The Auburn alumni was 14-10 with a 3.25 ERA in 2018, leading the league in both wins and losses, and also led in starts and innings. He was 2nd in ERA (.08 behind Josh Roenicke), 5th in Ks (31 behind Loree) and won his only Best Ten award (naming him the top pitcher in the league).

However, the CPBL met the juiced ball incident in 2019, and Woodall's pitching was severely influenced. He slumped to 2-12 with a 5.48 ERA, and led the league in both losses and homers allowed. Because of Covid-19, the Guardians still gave him another chance because it was not easy to find players abroad, but he struggled again. Woodall was 2-9 with a terrible 6.55 ERA in 2020, and it's no surprise that the Guardians released him.

The newly-founded Wei Chuan Dragons signed the experienced pitcher, and Woodall bounced back in 2021. He was 12-7 with a 2.90 ERA, ranked 3rd in wins (5 behind Brock Dykxhoorn), 3rd in ERA (1.13 behind Jose De Paula) and 10th in strikeouts (104 behind De Paula). He was the first player to get more than 10 wins in a season for 3 different teams. When Junichi Tazawa left the team in 2022, Woodall was named their new closer, and he notched 22 saves with a solid 2.28 ERA. He ranked 2nd in saves, 14 behind Bradin Hagens). Since the Dragons drafted Kai-Wei Lin in the 2022 CPBL draft, Woodall was turned into a starter in 2023. However, he suffered a shoulder injury, so he only pitched 15 games with a 2.67 ERA.
