An eight-time All-Star, he is a two-time World Series champion. He was the sixth pitcher to win Cy Young Awards in each league. By fashioning a no-hitter and a one-hitter in consecutive starts, he had the best back-to-back series of starts since Johnny Vander Meer's famed consecutive no-hitters. The 2025 Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame Election yields four new Hall-of-Famers: Ichiro Suzuki, Hitoki Iwase (pictured), Masayuki Kakefu and Hiroya Tomizawa. Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson (pictured) passes away just days short of his 66th birthday. Tom Hamilton wins the Ford Frick Award. Thomas Boswell wins the BBWAA Career Excellence Award. Dick Allen and Dave Parker are elected to the Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. wins the Tip O'Neill Award for 2024.

January 21: Today's featured birthday is that of Wilfredo Ledezma, who turns 44. 1921 - Kenesaw Mountain Landis formally assumes the job of commissioner. He will be known as the most powerful commissioner in baseball history. 1938 - Joe DiMaggio starts a contract holdout which will last almost three months, wanting a raise to $45,000. 1950 - 19-year-old Ryohei Hasegawa (pictured) tries out for and makes the Hiroshima Carp. He will become one of the greatest pitchers in Hiroshima's history, a bright light in a dismal era. 1953 - Al Simmons and Dizzy Dean are voted into the Hall of Fame; Joe DiMaggio finishes eighth even though is not yet formally eligible, having retired only two years earlier. 1969 - Roy Campanella and Stan Musial are elected to the Hall of Fame.
