Biographical Information[edit]
Jean Walters has played as high as AAA and has been on the Cuban national team. He is the grandson of former Cuban MVP Erwin Walters. [1]
He left Cuba in 2019 to go to the Dominican Republic and was signed there by the Arizona Diamondbacks. [2] He played five different positions in his pro debut for the 2021 ACL Diamondbacks, hitting .342/.457/.342 in 46 plate appearances. He split '22 between the ACL Diamondbacks Red (.242/.286/.273 in 12 G) and Visalia Rawhide (.198/.251/.242 in 72 G; 1-0, 3.86 in 7 G as a pitcher). He played every position except for catcher and center field that year. In 2023, he was with the ACL Diamondbacks Red (.341/.401/.492 in 36 G), Hillsboro Hops (5 for 28, BB, 2 2B) and Reno Aces (0 for 4).
Walters split 2024 between the Hops (.293/.335/.376 in 55 G; Sv, 0 R in 1 1/3 IP) and Amarillo Sod Poodles (.214/.254/.286 in 33 G). He appeared for Cuba in the 2024 Premier 12, 62 years after his grandfather had represented the island. He was their primary second baseman in the tourney. His first at-bat, against South Korea's Hyeong-jun So, he lined out. His first hit was off Australia's Luke Wilkins. He finished the event 2-for-12 with a run; in the field, he had 4 putouts, 4 assists and no errors. [3]
