Biographical Information[edit]
Jong-un Lee played in the KBO for 15 years.
Lee was drafted by the Lotte Giants in the 2nd round of the 1989 KBO draft, and he hit .266/.319/.344 in his first season. He only played 4 games in 1990, and he recorded a .256/.304/.346 batting line in 1991. Lee improved to .314/.354/.444 with 14 triples and 21 steals in 1992, and he set the KBO record for most triples in a season (broken by Keon-chang Seo in 2014). He was also 8th in batting (between Bong-chul Dong and Soon-chul Lee) and 7th in steals (tied with Jeong-hun Lee and Jun-tae Park). Lee slumped to .253/.312/.327 with 7 triples in 1993, and he was 7th in triples (tied with Jun-ho Jeon).
The Busan native hit .272/.301/.337 in 1995, and he only played 62 games with a .315/.350/.371 batting line in 1996. Lee then missed most of the next season due to a leg injury, and he had a .253/.276/.296 batting line in 1997. The Giants traded him to the Hanwha Eagles for Dae-ho Kang, and his batting line fell to .157/.176/.236 in 1998. Lee announced his retirement after that season, and he was the baserunning coach for the Giants from 2000 to 2002.
Lee later coached Kyungnam High School from 2003 to 2013, and he led the South Korean team that won Gold in the 2008 Junior World Championship. The Giants named him their baserunning coach in 2014, and he became their manager in 2015. However, the Giants were 8th in that season, and Lee was fired. He then managed the minor league team of the SK Wyverns from 2018 to 2020 and the Giants in 2023. When Larry Sutton resigned in the middle of the 2023 season, Lee was named their interim manager. He went to the LG Twins as their minor league coach in 2024.
Overall, Lee hit .272/.311/.350 with 580 hits and 9 homers in 10 seasons in the KBO.
