Biographical Information[edit]

Bong-chul Dong played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 8 years.

Dong played for South Korea in the 1991 Intercontinental Cup. He was 0 for 5 with a walk, sac fly, run and RBI. He did not handle a chance in 16 innings in the outfield, backing up Sung-bo Shim in RF and Jae-hak Shim in LF. The Samsung Lions selected him in the first round of the 1992 KBO draft, and he became a starting outfielder as a rookie. He hit .317/.433/.476 with 11 homers, ranking 7th in batting (between Eung-Guk Kim and Jong-un Lee), 5th in triples (7, 7 behind Lee) and 3rd in runs (95, 11 behind Jong-hun Jang). Dong then crushed 5 homers with a .345/.442/.486 batting line in 1993, and he was 5th in triples (5, 2 behind Myung-soo Lee and Chan-yup Roh). Dong slumped to .254/.359/.351 with 5 homers in 1994, and he hit .236/.344/.283 in 110 games in 1995. He started a journey after the 1995 season.

After having a 6-for-39 record in 1996 for the Lions, Dong was traded with Tae-lyong Kim to the Haitai Tigers for Byeong-hun Lee and Hoon Kim. Dong recorded a .187/.298/.302 batting line for the Tigers, then he was traded with Yu-seok Song to the LG Twins for Hyun Cho. Dong batted .262/.348/.372 with 5 homers in 1997, then the Twins traded him to the Hanwha Eagles for Young-gyu Jung in the middle of the 1998 season. Dong's batting line was .201/.347/.295 in '98, then the Eagles traded him with Min-ho Lee to the Ssangbangwool Raiders for Chang-sik Lim. Dong hit .274/.385/.339 in 1999, then he announced his retirement. He later managed the South Korea women's national baseball team, winning Bronze in the 2017 Women's Baseball Asian Cup and competing in the 2018 Women's Baseball World Cup.

Overall, Dong hit .264/.373/.372 with 583 hits and 34 homers in 8 seasons in the KBO.
