Biographical Information[edit]
Shingo Tatsumi pitched in Nippon Pro Baseball for 6 years.
Tatsumi set the Kansai Big 6 University Baseball League record by striking out 23 batters in a game against Kyoto University on April 8, 2007, and he completed a no-hitter against Doshisha University 7 days later. He won the MVP and Best Nine in the 2008 spring season, and he was drafted by the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks in the first round of the 2008 NPB draft after they lost the lottery for Taishi Ota.
He also represented Japan in the 2008 Haarlemse Honkbalweek and 2008 World University Championship. In the latter event, he struck out 7 in 4 1/3 shutout innings to beat Canada's Brandon Kaye and struck out 4 of 8 batters he faced to top Lithuania. He allowed two runs (one earned) in three innings versus the USA. He tied for 8th in the event in opponent average (.063), tied Mike Minor and Hyun-joon Park for 4th in K (16), tied for the win lead (with Kai-Wen Cheng, Kyle Gibson and Shinji Iwata). Only Masahiro Inui had a better ERA for Japan.
However, Tatsumi didn't get many chances with the big club during his pro career. He only pitched 24 games combined, and he announced his retirement after the 2016 season. He later coached the Tochigi Golden Braves of the Baseball Challenge League from 2019 to 2020 and the Ibaraki Astro Planets from 2022 to 2023. He was named the manager of the Astro Planets in 2024.
Overall, Tatsumi was 1-4 with a 7.50 ERA, struck out 39 and pitched 54 innings in 6 seasons in the NPB.
