Biographical Information[edit]
Andretty Cordero peaked at AA and later played for the Dominican national team.
He was signed by Texas Rangers scout Danilo Troncoso in August 2013. [1] Debuting with the [[DSL Rangers 1] in 2014, he hit .266/.328/.325 while being used primarily at DH. He fielded .901 at third base for the 2015 DSL Rangers 2, improving to .291/.352/.418 at the plate. Back with the DSL Rangers 1 for 2016, he hit .290/.345/.429 with a team-high 5 homers ad 48 RBI in 59 games, now mostly playing first base. He was third in the Dominican Summer League in RBI.
Coming stateside, he split 2017 between the Spokane Indians (.277/.328/.555 in 31 G) and Hickory Crawdads (.281/.319/.405 in 44 G), homering 12 times and whacking 17 doubles in 79 games. He fielded .984 at 1B for the '18 Down East Wood Ducks and hit 27 doubles. He tied for 8th in the Carolina League in two-baggers and tied Charles Leblanc and Tyreque Reed for 4th among Rangers farmhands in that department. For the 2019 Frisco RoughRiders, he posted a .270/.313/.408 line with 16 homers and 82 RBI, alternating between the corner infield spots. He was 9th in the Rangers organization in home runs (between Reed and J.P. Martinez) and was second in RBI (19 behind Matt Davidson). He tied for 7th in the Texas League in doubles and led in RBI (5 ahead of Edward Olivares). In the Dominican Winter League, he hit .284/.314/.448 for the Gigantes del Cibao. He was 3 for 19 with a homer for the Dominicans in the 2019 U23 Baseball World Cup. [2]
When the 2020 minor league season was wiped out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rangers let Cordero go. No other major league team would wind up picking him up; while he had led a AA circuit in RBI in his most recent season, his OPS was not that impressive for a first baseman. He hit .303/.337/.461 for the Leones del Caracas in the 2020-2021 Venezuelan League. Moving on to the independent leagues, he eked out a .195/.265/.276 line for the 2021 Evansville Otters. In the winter, he was 3 for 14 with a homer for the Colombian League's Gigantes de Barranquilla and 0 for 2 for the Dominican Águilas Cibaeñas. He hit .130/.154/.130 for the Dominican team in the '21 U23 Baseball World Cup. [3]
Bouncing back in 2022, he hit .340/.372/.522 with 35 doubles, 18 home runs, 87 runs and 118 RBI for the Lancaster Barnstormers. He was second in the Atlantic League in average (.004 behind Alejandro De Aza) [4], 10th in slugging, 8th in runs (between Joseph Rosa and Zach Jarrett), tied Rosa and de Aza for second in doubles (six behind Elmer Reyes), tied for 7th in triples (5), was second in RBI (7 behind Courtney Hawkins) and was second to Hawkins in total bases. He was named the All-Star first baseman. [5] His 184 hits were second-most in league history, five shy of Lew Ford's record. [6]
With the Águilas in 2022-2023, he slipped to .228/.292/.366. Remaining with Lancaster in '23, he again was excellent at .339/.376/.512 with 40 doubles and 116 RBI. He again was second in average (.007 shy of Drew Mendoza), again led in hits (166, 18 more than Mendoza), was second in doubles (one shy of Mendoza), led in RBI (14 ahead of #2 Ben Aklinski) and led with 12 sac flies. He was named the All-Star third baseman. [7] In the winter, he played for the Naranjeros de Hermosillo (.346/.397/.423 in 34 G) and Mexico and his nation's Águilas (.316/.409/.316 in 22 PA).
In the winter of 2024, he batted .342/.389/.537 with 29 doubles, 14 homers and 78 RBI for the Rieleros de Aguascalientes. He was second in the Mexican League in doubles (two shy of Vimael Machín) and was 5th in RBI. Making the Dominican team for the 2024 Premier 12, he was their main DH and backed up Rainer Nuñez at first base. In his first plate appearance, he flew out against Cuba's Yoennis Yera. His first hit was a double off Frank Álvarez. Against Taiwan, he broke up a no-hit bid in the 7th with a hit off Kai-Wei Lin. [8]
