Santiago de Cuba have been a successful team in the Cuban Serie Nacional since debuting in 1977, winning eight league titles. Two of Cuba's all-time greats, Antonio Pacheco and Orestes Kindelan, led the team from the mid-1980s until 2001.

Team nickname is the Avispas (Wasps).
