Biographical Information[edit]

Reutilio Hurtado was the center fielder for the Santiago de Cuba Wasps for two decades.

He led the Cuban Serie Nacional in times hit by pitch three times - 18 in 1997-1998, 22 in 1998-1999 and 25 in 2003-2004.

He hit .304/.416/.532 in 2007-2008, his 13th season. Through that year, his career average was .286 with 250 doubles, 141 homers and a .471 slugging percentage. He hit .357/.480/.578 in 2008-2009 with 70 RBI and 29 doubles (third in the league). He had 11 assists in center. In 2009-2010, he hit .321/.420/.588 and went deep 17 times.

Hurtado hit .324/.457/.660 with 30 dingers, 77 runs, 77 RBI and 64 walks in 90 games in 2010-2011, perhaps his best season; he also won a Gold Glove in center field. He was 10th in the league in runs, 3rd in home runs (behind only José Abreu and Yoenis Céspedes), 4th in total bases (212, between Yordanis Samón and Dariel Álvarez), tied Dennis Laza for 9th in times plunked (16), 5th in walks, 6th in slugging (between Céspedes and Alexander Malleta), 9th in OBP (between Urmanis Guerra and Donal Duarte) and 9th in OPS (between Malleta and Duarte). He batted .275/.394/.551 in 2011-2012 but slumped to .208/.354/.346 at age 37 in 2012-2013.

He bounced back in 2013-2014 at .258/.410/.481 with 59 walks, 14 home runs and 52 RBI in 74 games. He was second in home runs (two behind Yulieski Gurriel), 5th in RBI (between Alexander Ayala and Ariel Sánchez) and tied Duarte for 5th in walks. In 2014-2015, he hit .226/.401/.383 in the first half for Santiago de Cuba; when they did not make the second half, he joined Holguín and hit .369/.509/.585 for them. His 69 walks were third-most in the loop behind Roel Santos and Yadiel Hernández. He was only 4 for 31 with two walks, two runs and two RBI in the 2015 World Port Tournament. The veteran batted .283/.418/.454 for Santiago de Cuba in the first half in 2015-2016; again reassigned to Holguín in the second half, he hit .204/.318/.352 to end his career.

In 21 seasons, he had hit .289/.400/.490 with 1,060 runs, 1,085 RBI, 252 home runs and 267 hit-by-pitch in 1,821 games. He fielded .973 with 164 assists.

He became Santiago de Cuba's manager in 2016-2017, going 14-30 and then being replaced by Orestes Kindelán.
