The school was founded as Auxiliary Manual Training Normal School in 1903. It was known as Kansas State Teachers College of Pittsburg from 1913 to 1958 and Kansas State College of Pittsburg from 1959 to 1976, although it has always been called "Pitt State" or "Pittsburg State" colloquially.
