Biographical Information[edit]

Andrii Boiko has played for the Ukrainian national team; he is related to fellow Ukrainian team members Roman Boiko and Kostiantyn Boiko (and presumably Oleksii Boiko). [1]

Boiko was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in the 2017 European Championship U23, beating Dmitry Shtykher and Russia (which had invaded part of the Ukraine). [2] He was 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in the 2018 European Junior Championship, losing a one-run game to Britain and also to Lithuania. He tied for second on the staff in ERA. [3] He made his debut for the senior Ukrainian national team in the 2019 B-Level European Championship, closing out Yevhenii Tkachenko's win over Finland with a shutout inning. [4]

The right-hander got a big call in the 2021 European Championship Qualifier against host Serbia, with the victor advancing to the 2021 European Championship (Ukraine had not played in a European Championship in 11 years, Serbia had not yet made one). The 20-year-old outdueled Stefan Zivic, going six innings and allowing six hits, two walks and four runs (three earned) while fanning two for the win; Sergii Shtapura saved it. [5] In the 2021 European Championship U23, he was 3 for 9 with a RBI, handling nine chances error-free at shortstop. He also pitched once, losing to France (6 R in 3 1/3 IP). [6]

He pitched twice in the 2021 European Championship but had a much rougher time than in the qualifier. His first game, he relieved Danyil Khodakovskyi in the 4th with a 13-0 deficit against Spain, two on and two out and he got Jesús Ustariz to end the inning. In the 5th, he allowed a single to Daniel Jiménez and walked Lesther Galván then got Blake Ochoa on an infield fly. Yancarlo Franco singled in a run then Boiko retired Leomartires Rodriguez but Roibert Decena singled in another run to end the game due to the mercy rule. His other game, he relieved Tkachenko in the third with a 5-3 deficit in the 4th, one out and one on. He got Pascal Amon on a grounder but Lukas Jahn singled to make it 5-4. Boiko then hit Alex Schmidt, walked Shawn Larry and served up a grand slam to Eric Brenk as Germany went up, 8-5. Simon Gühring flew out to end the inning. In the 5th, he allowed a home run to Lou Helmig and a double to Vincent Ahrens. Myroslav Zhylka took over and let the inherited runner score. Boiko wound up taking the loss. His 37.80 ERA tied Lino Ballardini for 6th-highest in the 2021 Euros, but was not the highest on his team as Shtapura was at 81.00 in a high-offense Euros. [7]
