Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Andrew Knapp began his professional career in 2013. His father Mike Knapp played at AAA.
He was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 41st round of the 2010 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He inked a contract after being taken by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2nd round of the 2013 amateur draft. The scout was Joey Davis.
He hit .253/.340/.401 with 4 home runs and 23 RBI for the Williamsport Crosscutters in 2013, tying for the New York-Penn League lead (with Zach Green and Johnny Field) in doubles with 20. He hit .260/.324/.385 with 6 home runs and 32 RBI in 98 games split between the Lakewood BlueClaws and Clearwater Threshers in 2014 to earn MiLB.com Organization All-Star honors. He began 2015 with Clearwater.
On July 1, 2018, he hit a walk-off homer in the 13th inning to give the Phillies a 4-3 win over the Washington Nationals. He was pinch-hitting for P Nick Pivetta, the last hurler available for the Phils, so a position player would have had to come and pitch had the Phils not managed to score. His homer averted that possibility, and it was the first walk-off shot by a Phillies player since April of 2016.
Knapp stayed with the Phillies through 2021, producing a batting line of .214/.314/.322 from 2017-21 before being granted free agency. He signed as a free agent with the Cincinnati Reds but was released in early April 2022. He then signed with the [Pittsburgh Pirates]] playing in 11 games for them before being designated for assignment. On May 22nd he signed a minor league deal with the Seattle Mariners, being assigned to the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. He was eventually called up to back up Cal Raleigh. Knapp was again designated for assignment on July 9th and released four days later. He then signed with the San Francisco Giants and was sent to the AAA Sacramento River Cats before his contract was selected by the Giants on August 31st. He was again outrighted and sent back to Sacramento on September 8th, where he finished the season before electing free agency.
For 2023 Knapp signed a minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers and spent the year in AAA with the Toledo Mud Hens. He hit .253 with 25 RBIs in 70 games before being released on August 9th. Knapp finished the year with the Houston Astros after signing a deal with them and reporting to the AAA Sugar Land Space Cowboys. He played in 23 games, hitting .171.
In December 2023 Knapp signed a minor league deal with the Texas Rangers and played 60 games in 2024 for the AAA Round Rock Express, hitting .292/.374/.444 before exercising his opt-out clause on July 1st. On July 12th he signed a new contract with Texas but was released on August 22nd. The next day, Knapp signed a contract with the San Francisco Giants, going 1 for 6 in 3 games before being outrighted to the AAA Sacramento River Cats. On October 1st he elected free agency but on January 20, 2025, Knapp announced his retirement from baseball.
His brother Aaron Knapp [1] followed him to Cal, then played in the minor leagues from 2016 to 2021.
