Position player
A position player is a player who plays at one of the fielding positions other than pitcher. The pitcher/position player distinction is one of the most important ones in baseball. While position players are occasionally called on to pitch in emergencies or blowout games (see mystery pitcher) and a handful of regular pitchers have been used as position players in similar emergencies, there have been very few true two-way players in baseball history. Only slightly more common are players who were either converted from position player to pitcher or from pitcher to position player.
