Season Highlights[edit]
The 2022 Seattle Mariners started slowly after a surprising 2021 season that saw them finish just shy of the postseason. Unfortunately, that extended the longest postseason drought among current teams to 20 seasons. They went 11-10 in April, but a dreadful month of May, in which they were 10-18 dropped them 10 1/2 games back of the first-place Houston Astros, and seemingly out of contention. They recovered in June to go 16-13, then after losing their first game in July, reeled off 14 consecutive wins before the All-Star break. It was the longest winning streak ever by a team before the break, and the only two teams to have gone into the break with 10 or more wins - the 1935 Detroit Tigers and 1975 Cincinnati Reds - had both won the World Series. Their overall record on July 17th was now 51-42, and while they were still 9 games back of Houston, they were fully back in the race for a wild card slot. The streak ended on July 22nd, their first game after the break, when they lost, 5-2, to the Astros.
They clinched a spot in the postseason on September 30th, breaking their long drought. It came in spectacular fashion, on a walk-off homer by Cal Raleigh with the outs in the bottom of the 9th to give them a 2-1 win over the Oakland Athletics.
