Season Highlights[edit]

The 2021 Seattle Mariners had a strange start to their season. On the one hand, they were playing surprisingly well, with a record of 21-21 on May 17th; on the other, they were threatening to set new records for hitting futility. On May 18th, they were no-hit for already the second time of the young season when Spencer Turnbull of the Detroit Tigers pulled off the trick, allowing 2 outs and striking out 9 in a 5-0 win. That came just two weeks after John Means of the Baltimore Orioles had done the same thing on May 5th, in a 6-0 win. In Means's case, he come as close as humanly possible to pitching a perfect game without doing so, facing the minimum 27 batters, with the only baserunner coming on a dropped third strike in the 3rd inning. Sam Haggerty was then immediately caught stealing and Means went back to systematically mowing down the Mariners' hitters, ending up with 12 strikeouts. No team had ever been the victim of a no-hitter three times in a season, but after Thornton's gem, they were batting just .199 collectively, well below the all-time record of .208 set by the 1888 Washington Statesmen or the modern one of .211 by the 1910 Chicago White Sox.
