The 2001 Hoofdklase season was notable as the league changed it's structure mid-season, switching to a split-season format. At the end of the first half the top six teams would split off from the bottom four to participate in a "Playoff Pool". The remaining four teams played in a "Promotion/Relegation Pool", along with the top two teams from the Overgangsklasse.
DOOR Neptunus beat Mr. Cocker HCAW in the Holland Series to nail down their third straight Hoofdklasse title.
