1973 European Championship

From BR Bullpen

The 1973 European Championship was held from June 30 through July 8, 1973 in Haarlem, the Netherlands. It was notable as the last of 10 European Championships entered and won by the Dutch national team - 1975 would mark the first time they played in the Championships and failed to win it all. Bowie Kuhn was among the attendees.

Flag of Netherlands Netherlands went 8-0, not showing any sign that they were about to fall from the top spot. Hamilton Richardson was named both best hitter (.619) and MVP (the second time he claimed MVP honors in a Championship). In the semifinals, the Netherlands actually trailed Italy 6-4 in the third, but Win Remmerswaal came in and pitched 6 2/3 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks. Remmerswaal would be named the tourney's best pitcher and would become the first MLB player to begin his training in Europe.

Flag of Italy Italy went 6-2, losing only to the Netherlands, to take Silver. Giorgio Castelli led in homers.

Flag of Spain Spain was 4-4 to win Bronze.

Flag of Belgium Belgium placed 4th at 1-7. They were 1-4 in the preliminary round but 0-3 against the other teams in the top 4 bracket.

Flag of Sweden Sweden was 1-4 in the preliminaries but 2-0 in the 5th/6th place games.

Flag of France France was 1-4 in the preliminaries but 0-2 in the 5th/6th place games.
