The 1961 Cincinnati Reds were the surprise winner of the National League pennant. They had finished well under .500 in 1960, and the team re-tooled quite a bit over the winter. The team was the high point in Fred Hutchinson's twelve-year career as a major league manager.

The season is chronicled in Jim Brosnan's book, Pennant Race. Brosnan, a relief pitcher with the Reds, kept a diary during the season and turned it into his second book about baseball, following The Long Season. Like its predecessor, it is considered a classic of baseball literature.
