1940 Amateur World Series

The 1940 Amateur World Series was the third Amateur World Series (now known as the Baseball World Cup). It was played from September 14 through October 6 in Havana.

The Cuban national team took the victory with a 10-2 record, losing to the USA and Nicaragua but coming back to beat Nicaragua in the finals. Connie Marrero (3-2, 1.15) took both losses but still won the MVP award. Segundo Rodriguez hit .433 to lead the offense. Prominent names included future major leaguer Nap Reyes (.297, 5th among the Cuban position players) and Pedro Orta (.282), the father of Jorge Orta.

Nicaragua (9-3) was a strong offensive team. Jonathan Robinson led the tournament in runs (14), average (.444) and home runs (1) while Stanley Cayasso had the most hits (19) and Juan Vallecillo led in RBI (10) and tied for the most doubles (4). Leading the silver medalists' staff was Jose (Chino) Melendez (3-0, 1.31) and Leyman Sinclair (2-0, 0.00).

The United States took home the Bronze at 9-3. Future big leaguer Stubby Overmire was part of the staff.

Venezuela and Hawaii tied for fourth at 5-7. Venezuelan José Pérez led with three triples and tied for the lead with four doubles. Hawaiian Lawrence Kunihisa led with 7 stolen bases.
