Segundo Rodríguez was a Cuban amateur star of the 1930s and 1940s. He hit .403 for the Fortuna Sports Club to lead the amateur league in 1936. In the 1938 Central American and Caribbean Games, he hit .200 for the Cuban national team that took home the Gold Medal. The next year, he won his second batting title (.424) for Fortuna. He batted .433/.485/.500 for Cuba when they won the 1940 Amateur World Series; he was second in the event in average (.011 behind Jonathan Robinson, .004 ahead of #3 Lawrence Kunihisa).

In the 1941 Amateur World Series, he was with Cuba for a Silver Medal. He hit .323 and his 9 RBI were one shy of leader Bernardo Cuervo.
