Bernardo Cuervo was a top Cuban amateur of the 1930s and 1940s. He hit .200 for the Cuban national team that won the 1939 Amateur World Series but two of his four hits were triples to tie Vince Gonzales for the event lead and he paced all players with six RBI. In the 1941 Amateur World Series, he led second-place Cuba with a .400 average and led with ten RBI. He slugged .567 and again tripled twice, one behind leader Héctor Benítez. He tied Guillermo Vento for 6th in the Series in average. The next player to lead multiple Amateur World Series in RBI was fellow Cuban Agustín Marquetti in 1973 and 1976. He hit .200 for Cuba in the 1946 Central American and Caribbean Games, when they won Bronze.
