Biographical Information[edit]

Yu-Liang Lai was a 2-time All-Star in the CPBL. His son is CPBL pitcher Chih-Yuan Lai.

Wang represented Taiwan in the 1989 World Junior Championship, and the Jungo Bears signed Lai in 1993 when they were founded. Lai debuted on March 14 against the Wei Chuan Dragons, and he became the youngest pitcher to start a game in the CPBL (Keng-Hao Chang broke his record in 2010). He was also selected into the 1993 CPBL All-Star Game, and he pitched a shutout inning. Lai ended up having a 3-10 record with a 4.79 ERA in his rookie year, and he was 5th in losses (7 behind Chien-Cheng Kuo). He slumped to a 8.24 ERA in 23 games in 1994, then the Bulls turned him into a reliever. Lai bounced back in 1995, and he recorded a 3.94 ERA in 25 relief outings.

However, Lai couldn't repeat his performance, and his ERA never lower then 4.5 in the rest of his career. He was 7-11 with a 6.24 ERA in 1996, and he ranked 4th in losses (4 behind Kang-Chih Liao). Lai had a 3-6 record with a 5.29 ERA in 1997, then his ERA was 6.23 in 21 appearances in 1998. He was 2-2 with a 4.69 ERA in 1999, then his ERA was 5.08 in 23 games in 2000. Lai still attended the 2000 CPBL All-Star Game, and he surrendered 3 runs in 2 innings. He also relieved Mark Kiefer in the 4th inning of the 2000 Taiwan Series, and he allowed a run in 1 1/3 innings. The Bulls were beaten by the Uni-President Lions in 7 games. His ERA was 6.16 in 2001, then the Bulls released him. The Brother Elephants picked him up, and Lai had a 5.00 ERA in 14 games in 2002. However, he was diagnosed with a stroke in the middle of the 2002 season, and his professional career ended. Lai then coached Changhua Arts High School from 2008 to 2009, and he was a coach for the Shanghai Eagles in 2012.

Lai's repertoire included a fastball (peak 89.4 mph), curveball and forkball.

Overall, Lai was 20-43 with a 5.57 ERA, struck out 279 and pitched 630 innings in 10 seasons in the CPBL.
